What Can You Do – Green Island Vineyard and Measure J

Zoning says what you can or can’t do for a land parcel. For example, most of us live in the city in a house or an apartment, and it’s zoned for residential use. Land use can be changed by re-zoning. It does not have to be done, but it can be done. That is the heart of the issue with the ballot initiative for Green Island Vineyard, which will become Measure L once they achieve 1400 signatures.

With the 157 acre Green Island Vineyard, the property owners want to change the zoning from open space/ag, so they can develop (build) on it. They need approval to get that done. If you support no changes, i.e. retaining the agricultural heritage of Napa County, and keeping Green Island Vineyard as ag/open space, here’s what you can do:

  1. Get involved with American Canyon Engaged–we need you!
  2. Use your voice! The owners spent $220K the first time they got this on the ballot (Measure J, and it failed).  We are a volunteer group of American Canyon neighbors and residents.  Together we can be a voice for change if we stand up and speak up.
    • Think about why this issue is important to you. There can be many reasons, including
      • Protecting open space/ag heritage of Napa County
      • Critical need for wildlife habitat (learn more at this free Jan 14th presentation)
      • Buffer zone against sea level rise
      • Unhappy that business owners with deep pockets can keep bringing their ballot initiative again and again until they succeed
      • Dissatisfaction with how business interests seem to get higher priority with our elected leaders
      • Need to protect existing open space permanently with official conservation status
      • What else?
  3. What to ask for
    • Ask your AC neighbors & family to not sign the petition for the ballot initiative
    • Ask your elected City Council to not support this. And ask them to let the people vote!
      • If it qualifies, our elected City Council leaders need to know that we want to vote on it. After we voted down Measure J (the original Green Island Vineyard re-zoning effort), City Council passed Measure K on our behalf. We now hold the distinction of being the only city in Napa County to automatically approve warehouses. Email them at – council@cityofamericancanyon.org
  4. Organize your message, and share it!
WHO: Some suggestions of who we can share it with: City Council, Neighbors and friends in AC. Who else can we tell?

HOW: Email, phone, record a video and send ’em a link (we’d love to see it too!), yard sign, tee shirt, bumper sticker, letter to the editor, postcard — be creative! Ask for a response! Share their responses with us.

WHERE: City Council meetings (2x a month),upcoming Town Hall meetings on February 25th and 26th are particularly critical since we will have an opportunity for a dialogue with Council members. Please join us at these meetings. We need YOUR voice to stand up to corporate interests who profit from re-zoning.
